Best of 2018 - Best Comic Moment

Best Comic Moment

Comedy is hard, and writing about comedy is even harder. It's almost impossible to describe what makes something funny to someone else. A joke either lands or it doesn't, and physical comedy is even trickier. Luckily, most of these moments are already online so you can watch them if you want and experience it for yourself... but I would suggest just watching the whole movie instead.

Game Night - Bullet Removal

After accidentally shooting her husband with a gun she thought was fake, Rachel McAdams' Annie comes up with a corner store hodgepodge of treatments to avoid taking him to the hospital. Her delivery in this entire movie is absolute comic gold, but "That's boooone. That's not right" will live in horrifying, hilarious infamy. Her chemistry with Jason Bateman is also spot on in this movie. You can sense their affection and their history in this darkly adorable scene.

Deadpool 2 - X Force

Mega spoilers here!!!

The much hyped X Force does not quite live up to expectations. Best seen knowing very little.

Blockers - What Would Vin Diesel Do

Okay, all these so far have been varying degrees of gross... sorry. This one is probably the grossest of all, depending on what bodily fluids you find the most horrifying. A car chase goes shockingly wrong when the pursued start to feel the effects of the alcohol and bad driving all at once. It's pretty nasty, but the end result is so, so funny. Ike Barinholtz and Leslie Mann are hysterical here.

Sorry to Bother You - My Name is Cash, I Like to - "SMASH!"

This one is massively uncomfortable, but also so spot on. It's one of the more searing moments of social commentary in this go-for-broke film, as Cassius is essentially bullied into rapping in front of an entirely white crowd at a party hosted by his CEO. They assume he can rap just because he's black, and Lakeith Stanfield's awkward butchery of the art form is funny in and of itself. But then he decides to give the crowd what it clearly wants, and the result is... brutal. Boots Riley holds no punches.

Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse - Spider Ham

Finally, something wholesome!! (I'm sorry.) Although there is one line in particular that killed me, I don't want to spoil it, so I'll just say, every moment with Spider Ham is funny. John Mulaney as Peter Porker has to be one of the most ingenious casting decisions of the decade. I really hope they give him his own spin off. I'd be there opening day.
